“Acção saca Rolhas”

An association which belongs to the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. AGP’s objective is the support of the girls and young women education for an active citizenship. The members are divided up in local unities and inside these unities in groups of 5 to 8 elements (of the same age), called patrols.
The implementation of the CSR system brought about the creation of a Cork Stopper Collection Network, between the members, distributed by the nine districts where the Guides are localized (Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Viseu, Lisboa, Santarém, Faro e ilhas).
The “little birds and Guides” collect the corks. Each patrol is entitled to their collections points (cafés, restaurants, family, neighbourhood, school...).
At national level, stoppers are stored in 3 principal points (Lisboa, Braga and Viana do Castelo). AGP’s preparing a fourth point, in Algarve.

The project emerged because knowing about a CSR project made by the Girl Guides of Australia. AGP established a first protocol with INETI (Instituto Nacional de Engenharia, Tecnologia e Inovação, who had a patent of a recycling method) and AIEC (cork industry association). The partnership didn’t operate well, and AGP looked for a new partner.

How much:

About 5 tons.
In 2007, “we didn’t have store capacity, missing a partner”. At the beginning the town council of Ericeira accepted the first cork stopper containers. “We had the corridor full of corks”.

Partnerships:

Cork company Granorte , protocol from April 2008. They buy the stoppers 350 euros/ton. They take care of the transport, from the 3 store points.

Benefit:

Help given to Social Solidarity institutions such as “SOS Children’s Villages”. From 2009, AGP would like to help entities like Associação Sol, in the field of another project connected with the education for tle development and the Millenium Objectives. “Our guides are up to date with this, and, always as possible, being the girls themselves to handle the donations, increasing their conscience to the hardship of the close people”.
